"For women with something to get off their chests"

Send out the dancing girls! Confetti, costumed ponies, fireworks, and champagne....GO!!! That's my idea of a celebration....celebration?? Indeed. I am peaceing out. to NYC!!!! I got the internship!!!! All of your good vibes wrapped me in a nice vibe-y bubble of positive energy, I was like a fucking sun beam of goodness.

I have a week to secure; housing, a job, some money, AND my sanity. If I can successfully pull that off I give you FULL permission to call me Fucking Superwoman. Yes, Fucking is a necessary emphasis. Let's just say I'm going to be meditating and visualizing a lot this week- I'm gonna give The Secret a run for their money. The whole UNIVERSE will need to conspire to help my train wreck energy turn into smooth-calm-collected. I am the embodiment of a human tornado. You should see my hair today.

The magazine? BUST. A magazine that represents fierceness, intelligence, wit, and style. There will never be an article that undermines women's intellectual capacity. They'll never instruct you on how to dress like some scummy man's favorite high school fantasy and cover your tits in chocolate frosting while wearing clear 8inch heels- unless that's your sort of thing, we've all got our something.

It is progressive, liberal, kitschy, creative and honest. No censorship. And, listen to some of the dames that have graced the cover; Susan Surandon (in all of her political glory), Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Gwen Stefani, Chloe Sevigny, Peaches, Sandra Oh, Rosario Dawson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Juliette Lewis- cause she's a rock god stud, Beth Ditto of The Gossip, Rose Mcgowan, Amy Sedaris- she's my hero, among others.... I'm thinking I'd like to see Kate Nash? Sarah Silverman? Sienna Miller- because her performance in Factory Girl didn't get nearly enough play considering it's brilliance.

Who's your "bad-ass woman hero" that should be a "cover girl"??

ALSO- all you NYC bloggers that I love and adore (and everyone else I am sorry I have been a horrible blog friend, I promise to get it together and not neglect you- very soon.)
if you have any suggestions on work, housing, etc...let me know ;) IF NOT, I'd love to hear from you anyway- I'd like to secure an active social life, if at all possible.
And I'm single, SO. Feel free to hook me up-I'm not opposed to blind dates if cocktails are in involved.

Congrats!!! I wish I could suggest someone but my mind has gone completely blank, everyone I can think of is on your list already! :( Sounds like a cool magazine to be working on though, I'm jealous!

I've thought of someone, two seconds after posting. Christina Applegate - she's hilarious and she doesn't get enough publicity. There. I feel better now.

CHELSEA.

i'm flippin' bouncing up and down right now on my couch and - just so you can really get the correct image in your mind - i just got out of the shower so water from my hair is now flying everywhere because i am damn excited for you lady!!

first of all - the magazine? sounds perfect. i am thrilled for you - and will now (well, after clothes have been procured) plan to head over to a bookstore right away and pick up a copy! everything about the mag sounds right up my alley. (also ps - sienna was brilliant in factory girl. i saw her on letterman afterwards and homegirl has got a kickass sense of humor. she is definitely a girlcrush haha)

ok. i need to stop leaving you an essay here. but CONGRATULATIONS!!! x A SQUILLION. i'm so, so happy for you. i love that it's all happening in a week too (this so sounds like me as well - i think i almost prefer it that way! to not have too much time to have to think things out but just DO IT). like i said - my move to new york may not be TOO far behind yours. so please know that we will be hanging out once i get there too!

This is awesome! I'm so thrilled for you. What a great opportunity and I love that it's a move towards something that you really care about. The magazine sounds awesome. Anything that features a Sedaris is good in my books. No, is EXCELLENT in my books. I wish you tons of luck on this new adventure.

Congrats! As far as housing, check with Equityapartments.com I have rented from them in Seattle and NYC, they were great. In NYC I lived at 71 Broadway which was in the financial district. You can go on their website and see what's available too. They have probably 10 properties in NYC. Good luck, let me know if I can help. It will all come together for you, just don't pull your hair out while it does!

ANd now you can hang out with us NYC bloggers!!!

Email me if you have any questions!!!

Congratulations!!!!! That is so awesome and the magazine sounds great. NYC is a great place to be :) Check craigslist for housing, i've found all my apartments in nyc through that and there are a lot of temporary sublets out there. If you have any questions about neighborhoods, etc let me know!! i know many and have lived in several myself. :)

heeeellll yes! although i am a bit bummed about you leaving LA, i am so excited for you and this new adventure. congrats love!

nicoleantoinette said...

Shut UP! I'm so excited for you! Haha, within like 3 weeks of each other I will have moved from NYC-LA and you will have done the opposite. Bi-coastal is where it's AT baby. :)

Definitely check Craigslist for housing and all of that. I've found 3 apartments/rooms to rent that way and they've all been pretty great.

Good luck! Ah, NYC is the best. Let me know if you need any recommendations for.. anything!

Oh, and doing it all in a week? is th way to go. Too much thinking/planning is bad for the soul. Go big or go home, no?

OenoLogical said...

Lucky BUST. I just hope they manage to perform to your high standards, having passed the audition!

If you're modest enough not to insist on the cover for yourself, I vote for Natasha Khan of Bat for Lashes. It's hard to create a unique sound and look in a crowded musical market-place. Mind you, Princess Polly is right that Christina Applegate is under-rated.

Congratulations! The magazine sounds great.

Alexis said...

Hurrah! Congratulations, that is so exciting! I'll have to start reading that one!

I'd say Idina Menzel, Stella McCartney, Betsey Johnson...three kick-ass ladies that I would pick up any magazine for. Or, myself, I think I'm the right type of awesome to grace magazine covers...

:)

Maxie said...

Congrats! That's freakin awesome. I <3 Sandra Oh, so my favorite has already been on there.

Dolce said...

Congrats!!! I'm so excited for you and terribly jealous. Oh, how I love NY! I don't think I've ever come across BUST before but now I'll keep my eyes peeled the next time I'm in Borders.

I would love to see Angelina. I can't help it...I just can't get enough of her and she has such a great story.

Lynn said...

Congratulations! :] That sounds awesome.

As for looking for an apartment.. My cousin lives in Inwood & supposedly it's pretty inexpensive. Only problem is that it's wayyy uptown. Like the last subway stop before the Bronx.

Chele said...

Congratulations chels, dont forget to post link to our first article. We want to see and feel proud.
Its wonderful, and so cool that you get to go over to New York, must be hard leaving LA.

Hmm I would love to see Zoey Deschanel on the cover I think she is a really cool indie actress. Totally agree with Christina Applegate. Bjork. Eryaku Baddhu (have no idea how to spell that)

Dont know how well known Brits are in the U.S but Jennifer Saunders or Ruby Wax...women who really know their comedy, genious. I also love Lizzie Jagger..I mean shes the daughter of Mick..come on. Winona Ryder, whats not to dig about her? The woman was in reality bites, such a important movie.

Ok thats all I could think of. Have fun and good luck with the move

Exposed said...

I'm adding my congrats to the pile, and plugging craigslist for apartments as well. Also, if you don't want to jump into signing a lease, Manhattan Mini Storage is a great place to keep your stuff while subletting or hosteling to find something perfect.

Feel free to email for any specific questions, and I'll be happy to take you out for a welcome brunch and dance class to get you acquainted to the city!

As for quick money- are you thinking restaruant/bar route? Temping? Other ideas?

m said...

oh my GOSH congratulations! that is great news--i think you are just what bust needs!

and everyone has given any apt ideas i would've had, though i also recommend checking ny message boards. i live in brooklyn and i like it more every day.

How much do I love Bust? Seriously, it's the greatest magazine EVER. I think the ladies of Feministing.com should grace the cover. They're beautiful, smart, snarky, and delightfully sassy!

That is fantastic news! The best advice anyone can give for New York is: bring lotsa money.

Also, this post just reminded me that I should be reading "Bust" more often.

Chelsea, thanks for your kind words regarding my mother's passing. Although I am in a dark place right now, your glow is peaking through some cracks and I can feel your energy. Congrats on your slice - there is no other place in the world like NYC. As a native Rhode Islander, I spent many days and nights twirling in the streets of New York, bedazzled with the rush of adrenaline that comes free in the city, play acting that someday I would work for a major book publisher and live high as a kite. One piece of advice, don't REALLY twirl in the streets - the cabbies don't like it much!

and is it weird that i would pick lindsay lohan? well if i could pick her pre-craziness that would be good. like during her mean girl days.

Katherine said...

I know it's been said dozens of times over, but CONGRATULATIONS! You seem like somebody who really deserves the opportunity...your intelligence and energy show.

As for someone who deserves to be on the cover...I'm sad to say that there's no well-known woman I look up to more than any other. I'll think about it, though.

From one CO transplant in NYC to another - congrats on the internship and an early welcome to the big smoke! It's one of a kind and you've definitely picked the right time in your life to come out and embark on a grand adventure. Trite, yes. But true.

My $0.02 re NYC housing: given your short time-frame, subletting a room (i.e. craigslist) is probably going to be the best bet. Find something temporary, and if it works for you, stay on longer. If that situation doesn't suit you (or if your roommate is a kook), you'll have the option of looking once you get out here. You can afford to be a bit choosier seeing as you'll (presumably) have more time. The downside is that you might not feel "moved in" immediately, but it beats all of the leg-work you'd have to do for your own place in the next week.

Your own place = paperwork, photocopies, guarantors, overnight packages, tenant screenings, cashiers checks, more overnight packages.

Subletting a room = possessing a winning personality and promising not to leave dirty dishes in the sink or steal your roommate's fichus. You've at least got the personality covered.

If you do decide to look for your own apt, Brooklyn's a good bet - a little less zany of a real estate scene than Manhattan. Not to mention the numerous artists and people in publishing/writing--right brain types.

I found my current place off of this website: www.aptsandlofts.com. Otherwise, going directly to management companies (like Vanessa's suggestion about Equity Apts) can be fruitful.

Also, under no circumstance should you tell a broker that you are in a rush to find a place. Unless you're the kind of person who digs pouring blood in a shark tank and then hopping in for a swim...

Best of luck with it all. And I agree with the music comment - great stuff. If I may be so bold, a few recommendations: Jehro, Nicole Atkins & Black Kids.

Holy shit, I LOVE Bust! And, you know, I live in NYC, so clearly we are going to have to hang out. I would look on Craigslist ASAP for sublets, roommate wanted ads, et cetera. Like, go now. They go quickly most of the time. Unfortunately, I don't know of anyone right now with an available room, but I'll ask around!

Turquoise Ribbons said...

Ok, first of all, I know we just met on 20SB an all, but CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is soooo exciting! I found my apt through craigslist, but it wasn't a fun experience at all. If you haven't found one already, keep looking. You'll find something eventually. And let me know when you get settled in and we can get together for drinks. :)

I fucking LOVE BUST! I asked for a subscription for Christmas but I think that the family thought I was asking for a porn mag or something because not one issue has arrived in my mailbox...
