When You're BROKE and in LOVE......you buy shit with pennies.

I paid for an entire weekend vacation in CHANGE. Damn straight.

Pooling together a shitload of pennies and shiny laundry money can buy you; a tank of gas, bratwursts, a 24 pack of Corona, a liter of Beringer Pinot Grigio, S'mores ingredients, bagels, condoms, about 25 pounds of trail mix, (which was entirely consumed by moi), a wicked sunburn and wilderness sex.
I forgot to mention, we were also sleeping in bags, braving tornado warnings and peeing in trees, this act is also known as; camping.
This is no Ritz with poolside bottles of Veuve, this is actually where mosquitoes crawl up your Va-jay and bears eat your face off.

Amidst the complete chaos of not knowing where my paycheck is going to come from every given month I've decided to have fun anyway....-wait, back up, I see confused faces- yes, I DO several freelance jobs that pay and mostly pay well, but if you freelance you also know that means; we pay when we it suits us, so suck down some rice cakes and live in poverty, or start go-go dancing on the side. My ass needs about 34,000 hours more of spinning before I make that leap and because my spinning teacher insists on playing Vanilla Ice that's not gonna happen- so poverty, Coinstar and creatively doctored rice cakes for dinner it is!

...I digress; The point is, My Love and I are feeling it....we're feeling the consequences of choosing a rocky path instead of a straight one. We're not going out for dinner, we're cooking each other Ramen and taking advantage of happy-hour two for ones.

When you're broke and you're in love, you spend more time looking into each others eyes than looking at wine lists. When you're broke and you're in love you spend more time reading each other Flannery O'Conner short stories, than going to movies and watching stories. You spend more time at BBQ'S with your families, than hosting a BBQ at your home with friends.

When you're broke and you're in love you talk about the "someday" you'll be able to visit the Greek Islands and cross off your list of "If I had 15 More Days to Live I would......."

You talk about the day you'll be able to pay off student loans and buy saffron strands and ground turkey without feeling like you're breaking the bank. You talk about your future home; wood or terracotta floors? You talk about buying building a wine rack from scratch and the kinds of flowers you'll have in your garden; poppies, sweet peas, lilac, peonies and hydrangeas.

When you're broke, you're musicians and you're in love you visualize the day you'll perform at Red Rocks, how nervous you'll be when you collaborate with Chris Martin, what the tour bus will look like, the day we negotiate my Maxim deal for my cover (yes- I'd totally do it) and who we'll thank on our CD insert.

When you're broke and you're in love, you spend more time sitting outside than you ever will, because it's the one beauty that's free.

When you're broke and you're in love you have NOTHING but SELF to show for....and actually, that's exactly what makes the love feel as strong as STEEL.

When you're broke and you're in love you brainstorm, you dream, you reveal your vulnerabilities and you call PBR and Granola a "Feast." When you're broke and you're in love you don't "do brunch", you don't plan weekends away in Santa Fe to do foodie things and look at art, you don't bring the best wine to potlucks, you don't express your love through reservations, suit jackets, necklaces and bouquets- but through moments walking down Denver's streets and clutching the only tangible thing you have...... each other.

When you're broke- you're tested, you're scratching, you're digging and you're hopping something, anything, HITS. You're shameless, you're worn and you're willing. When you're in love- you're stupid, you're bold, you're hopeful and you're blind. When you're in love AND you're broke, you're the perfect combination of blissfully optimistic....hence, paying for vacations in change, Googling your dream wedding dress and beleiving in your one option, no backup plans.

When you're broke and in love you fantasize about you're future wedding dress, the ring, the honeymoon and the menu- even though you can barely buy gas and your current menu is processed and packaged.

When you're broke and in love you dream about walking down the aisle, beaming, complete, awaiting life as a couple, your dreams actualized and a vanilla buttercream frosting cake to cut while wearing one of these;

Dear Monique Lhuillier, I love you.

You make it happen. When you're broke and you're in love, things aren't easy.......but they're motivating.

Have you ever been broke and in love?????

And p.s. which dress?..... (so that once my man and I's music is playing on a Visa commercial we can start planning for real.....:)

I loved this post!

My boyfriend and I are pretty broke, too. We've done a lot of moving around together after college instead of staying in one place and taking the traditional path. They always say that money struggles ruin relationships, but for us it has been the best thing. We have been through so much together and we are a stronger, closer, more real couple for it.

Kudos to you and your boyfriend. Once you're famous and swimming in cash, your relationship will already have a foundation of REAL love. :)

yea..and so glad I read your post today... I was melting down to my bf about being broke.. but you are so right, that it when you can appreciate the little things you do together. When I was in college.. we used to eat on pennies all the time. They were the most cherished meals.. everything was great because we barely had money to do anything .. I guess I should be a little more patient now :0)

Ahh, how idealistic.

Me and my ex could be broke and in love at uni, or up north in the UK where life is cheap.

Then my ex boyfriend was broke, I was in love, but we were in London.

London don't do broke. And if you are, you don't do London. Not even for pennies.

You'd need thousands.

teabelly said...

Being broke and in love sounds like heaven to me. Who needs stuff when you've got each other? I swear I'm not usually this sickening. :)

Actually, I know it can be hard too, and the basic living can wear on you.

Please Don't Eat With Your Mouth Open: Been there, same place, same situation. London sucks.

Yes! We also talk about the fact that our student loans will overlap the loans of our unborn children.

We've been together since high school and the sole reason why we aren't married yet is money - but that doesn't stop the constant inquiries.

This post was so awesome.

I love the top block, second row, middle.

Oh, I love this post. So true. It's amazing how crafty couples get when they need to save funds. Something as simple as a breakfast of nothing but scrambled eggs, while sitting on the front porch rocking chairs, makes for a perfect morning.

1st section, 2nd row, 2nd dress! Classy and flirty...
My husband and I moved 600 miles to Florida when we first started dating! No jobs, no place to live - only each other and a dog. We ate on $1.99 beach specials, ramens and, (if it was a good night) we got bologna for protein! Hang in there. With love like yall have, that's all that matters. One day this will all be a funny story.

This post hit home for me! You have finally helped me put my finger on why my DH and I are so strong. We have been through being broke together and it was the hardest of times and the loudest of laughs! You can't hide who you really are when you are in such an extreme siutation. After 5years now, we are finally making some money, but we still charish sitting around on the porch with a beer watching the bugs pass by!

Shannon said...

Welcome to our life! Well, kind of anyways. We may not be flat broke, but we basically live paycheck to paycheck, with a bit of savings. We're comfortable, but not exactly where we want to be. We go through periods where things (such as unexpected vet or doctor visits, car troubles, etc.) suck all the money we have until there's none left, with 2 weeks to go until another paycheck comes in. It can get stressful, but being able to deal with that stress in a positive way and not let it get to you is what's important. You are my hero for paying for an entire vacation with change. Haha ;)

Sure myself and The Boy are currently scrimping and saving for a year's move to Australia!!! It's going to be fantastic! Poor and foodless, but fantastic!lol!

I just forwarded the post to my boyfriend because last night we got in a little argument. Why? Because I'm a whiny brat, that's why! He just moved up to Florida to be with me so he's jobless and broke, and I'm only 1 year out of school so my bank account isn't looking so hot, either. We're usually really good at finding free/cheap stuff to do with each other, but when we're both complaining about money all the time, it can be draining.

So, thanks for the wake up call and reminding me what's really important. And I really like the dress in the top middle of the first collage.

I'm actually broke and in love right now. Me and my girl have been engaged for about 2 and a half years, and reason why we keep delaying the Big Day is because we NO FRIGGIN' MONEY! We're trying to save, though (keyword: trying). Most of our romantic dinners are at McDonalds nowadays, and I'm currently looking for a 2nd part-time job (working at a library doesn't pay the rent, unfortunately).

We probably won't have a real DJ at our wedding. I'll just play all my Van Morrison CDs for everyone to (moon)dance to.

ablogofherown said...

I agree with Carol's dress choice. If Lhuillier wasn't so damn expensive I would have bought one.

The Boy and I are sorta in the same boat, to a lesser degree. He does well, but I'm unemployed. Balls.

In my opinion, broke and in love is the best way to be in love. :) My husband and I went through that same period... of course it gets better, but we still enjoy swinging in the hammock outside over going to a movie any day! These are the memories that build a life together! :)

P.S. Amen to the freelance life... it's feast or famine, and never when you expect it!

I've been broke and mostly in love for 2 years now, the only problem is after awhile you start hoping some of those things you've hoped for will start happening. The really hard part is to keep the dream alive. Learning to live within your means(for both of you) and be ok with that is also really important. My man is used to having money, so being broke was really a big adjustment for him and it was very stressful for both of us. I've had plenty of oh my god I can't afford to live one more day melt downs and he's always been there. Being broke and in love can be the greatest.

I relate to this post SO much... loved it! It really IS the little things in life that make being in love so awesome, you know? Even on the rare occasion that my boyfriend and I have money to burn, we'd both much rather relax and enjoy each other's company, laughing and playing and being young together.

And about the dress-- I'm a BIG fan of the bottom right in the top photo :)

I used to be broke and in love (but now i'm just broke!) and we would eat chicken and rice every night and watch movies from his DVD collection and take walks through the woods. We recently spoke about this time, and he apologized for not having any money and you know what? I didn't even realize we WERE broke because I was so happy.

As for dresses, I could really see you in the bottom collage, first one on the top left. I personally love the one in the first collage, middle of the bottom row.

I love this post! I am definitely broke and in love right now (i make maybe $15,000 a year, am $6,000 in debt not to mention am leasing a car and going to school) and my boyfriend just got laid off.

It's a little difficult for us... while we aren't fighting over money or anything, we live in a super small town with NO friends nearby-- and while I'm much more of a... stop-and-smell-the-roses kind of girl (who is happy with a pb&j picnic at the park, or even just watching the sunset together), my boyfriend doesn't appreciate the little things in life as much as I do. I am trying to help encourage him to be grateful for small things... I don't know if it's working.

I especially love the 3rd dress 1st row, 1st and 2nd dress in the 3rd row and the last dress of them all.

When hubs and I were dating, I remember spending Friday nights on the floor (no couch) next to a lamp (we picked up from Ikea) and just chatting away (no TV) as we sat and ate some KFC. We've been blessed since and have come a long way but no one can say I married him for the money. If you can make it through the tough times, you can make it through anything!

Thanks for the warm welcome on my blog!

We've been broke-ass eating superstore brand KD, spending our nights just with each other on our hand-me-down couch, and we didn't need anything else because when you've got that TOTALLY CRAZY FOR YOU love, the balance in the bank account doesn't stop you from having a good time. Now we're doing great financially and planning our wedding - everything has fallen into place and we're still crazy for one another, and that's what really matters! How funny, darling, I'm broke and in love too. Gave up the exec. ad sales job (i.e. selling advertising = let's just bang our heads against the wall in frustration!) to start my own biz. Happy hours and gallery walks don't disappoint!

On the dress...second set of pictures, bottom row, far right. If I'd been married in a traditional white gown, it would have looked alot like that. Romantic and form fitting, but with a very fifties lace top.

Yes, I've been broke and in love before. We lived in my husband's great-aunt's finished attic for a year and a half after I left my phd program and we didn't know what we wanted to do. It was hard in many ways (a lot of rice cakes in our lives then too) but ultimately it made me realize (a) how much I really love that man...no matter what:) and (b) how you can have a really rich life without lots of money.

My bf and I have been in love for 8 years, broke for the first 7.

We would take the subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan (he had a metrocard for work and sometimes I'd have to dip into the change jar to buy a 2-way card) and just walk. We loved going to Union Square and sitting, watching the dogs at the dog park and the breakdancers. We'd go to Barnes and Noble across the street and read books and magazines for free. It didn't seem so bad because we were together.

I, in a very weird way, miss that feeling. Having to be creative because you honestly can't afford NOT to be.

ever been broke and in love....
can i say YES!!!

i have never ever believed that people should wait until they have enough money to get married...
and i'm so thankful that we didn't!
my flake and i got married, while he was still in college, and not working. not that he couldn't have worked, but i felt it was only fair that he got the chance to focus on school....and just school...oh and his new wife! :)

as soon as he graduated, he got a job, and we were both very excited...
only problem
the job is in texas...and the job isn't the most stable job, being that the company is going through some really really bad money troubles! he has been there all of two months, and has already had 3 of the four pay checks come late, not to mention the company owes him for moving expenses and such.
we realized this weekend, that we were going to need to sell his road bike, just so he could make rent....
but all i can say is...
yes, being in love and being broke is hard,
but i know that no matter what it makes us strong, it makes us think, it makes us happy to have each other, and it makes us happy to know that we can do it, and one day, oh one day, we will be thankful for things that we don't have now!

yeah: liv has been broke and in love.

it kind of messed everything up though, because of the pressure and anxiety. unbelievable.

i love this post, because it is possible to stick together when you are broke and I think its a perfect chance to get out of it, because you can have loads of great times in bed, without spending anything.
and i love all the the things you brought up.

about the dress: i really hope you will buy one of my dresses one day! you do need a wild one.

pretty sad.

that in itself is sad.

You can now wave your underwear as a flag of being eco friendly and green and there has recently been an increase in the amount of men's underwear creeping on to the high street and ecommerce shops that are friendly to our environment and observe fair trade ethics.

Rainwater Harvesting said...

There are certain things about the concept of rainwater harvesting that can sometimes be taken for granted, especially if you've been familiar with the process for a while. This was certainly the case for me while talking to a neighbour about rainwater tanks.
One thing that I'd noticed over the last few years driving my car around Melbourne, Australia were the amount of houses that have Rainwater Tanks installed (and they're just the one's you can see from the street).

oak furniture collection said...

Oak furniture has spent many years at the top of the charts when it comes to favourites. Its appeal is due to the lovely warm, coarse texture and its functionality. As it is a very hard wood, oak is superb for making furniture which will stand the test of time. If you have a young family and need tables and chairs which are robust, oak is definitely worth a thought. Although it is often quite expensive, you will find that the items made from oak will keep their good looks and will probably still be around to take a battering from your children's children in years to come. The price tag on some items may put people off buying, but, if you were to consider getting some oak unfinished furniture, you may be able to save yourself quite a few dollars.
